European Comission, through LIFE call, approves about 9 M€ to develop pioneer CO2 emissions capture and purify system at an industrial level in Soria.

Sistema pionero de captura y depuración de las emisiones de CO2

Life CO2 Int Bio project, coordinated by Fundación Patrimonio Natural de Castilla y León, will develop a CO2 emissions capture and purify system to show carbon dioxide capture viability in industrial installations and transform them into a value added product. The budget is near to 9 M€, of which European Union will contribute with about 2 M€. The project will be developed until June 2023 and it will position Castilla y León as a reference region at a European level in climate change mitigation through capture and purification of the emissions and their transformation into value added products.

European Commission has awarded the project presented by Fundación Patrimonio Natural de Castilla y León to the Climate LIFE Call 2018, together with Bioeléctrica de Garray, Gestamp Biomass O&M and Carburos Metálicos.

The project will develop a CO2 emissions capture and purification system from the gases generated by the energy biomass plant, property of Bioeléctrica de Garray, currently operating in "Ciudad del Medio Ambiente" in Garray (Soria).

In this way, purified CO2 will be obtained, which can be applied as a product in different industrial sectors where that bottled commercial gas is usually employed, such as in agri-food sector, laboratories, medical centers...

Life CO2 Int Bio is one of the projects with a highest budget approved into the LIFE Programme, with a total execution budget of about 9 M€. The grant awarded is approximately of 2 M€, and its execution period is from June 2019 to June 2023.

In the project context, Life Cycle Assesment methodology will be applied in addition to the Carbon Footprint, to determine the advantages of the new product in comparison with the conventional product. Green procurement criteria and Carbon Footprint reduction standars will be used in the entire execution phases.

An eco-label system will be also developed for the new "ecological CO2".

With this project, it is intended to positionate Castilla y León as a reference region at a European level in climate change mitigation through CO2 capture and the creation of value chains for new products. This it is called CCU (Carbon Capture and Utilization), an innovative area which is barely developed in the world and that in Spain will have this pioneer experience in our region.

This approach is aligned with the circular economy principle, in which any waste, emission or discharge must be transformed into a resource, a new raw material, and return to the productive cycle.

As project results, it is expected to achieve a production of 20.000 t/year of "ecological CO2" and a reduction of emissions of 498 t/year of CO2 in front of the conventional gas production.

With this project, Fundación Patrimonio Natural has taken part in 15 LIFE projects since its foundation in the year 2005: 8 Nature LIFE, 4 Environmental LIFE, 1 Integrated LIFE, 1 Information LIFE and 1 Climate LIFE.

The LIFE Programme is the EU´s funding instrument for the environment and climate protection. The budget to the funding period 2014-2020 is 3.400 milion €.
